Common processing methods of sintered NdFeB magnets
The main shapes of sintered NdFeB magnets are disc round, square, cylinder, ring, tile and various special-shaped products. In actual production, large blanks are produced first, and then finished products are processed according to the size requirements of customers.
Sintered NdFeB is prepared by powder metallurgy. The material has the characteristics of high hardness, high brittleness and easy breakage. Exotherms during processing, corrosion, and defects can all impair magnetic properties. Therefore, it is very necessary to choose a suitable processing method according to these characteristics.
At present, the processing of sintered NdFeB is mainly based on traditional cutting, grinding, chamfering, drilling, etc., in addition to modern technologies such as electric discharge cutting, laser processing, and ultrasonic processing.
1. Slicing (cutting) process
The cutting process is mostly done with slicers, wire EDMs, wire saws or laser cutters.
2. Grinding process
It mainly refers to the processing method of grinding the surface of the workpiece with a grinding disc or a grinding wheel. The commonly used grinding methods for square NdFeB magnets are: vertical grinding, flat grinding, double-end grinding, etc. Cylindrical and annular NdFeB blanks are often centerless, square, internal and external round grinding, etc. The station forming grinder can be used for tile-shaped, fan-shaped and special-shaped magnetic steel.
3. Drilling (punching) processing
The drilling process of sintered NdFeB is extremely prone to fracture or chipping, so drilling operations require specific equipment and processes. Commonly used equipment for NdFeB inner hole processing includes punching machines, instrument lathes and bench drilling machines.
4. Chamfering
During the grinding, slicing, drilling and other processing processes of NdFeB magnetic products, the sharp corners are easy to cause edge drop, and the sharp effect in the electroplating process will make the uniformity of the coating worse. Therefore, after machining, the magnetic steel is usually chamfered, including mechanical chamfering and vibration chamfering. Common chamfering equipment includes vibration grinding chamfering machine and roller chamfering machine.
Common defects in processing include excessive size, poor verticality and contour, missing corners, knife wires, scratches, wear marks, corrosion, hidden cracks, etc.During the production process, we will choose the most efficient processing route according to the product's dimensional specifications and geometric tolerance requirements.
